Heart Disease
We are all aware that regular dental check-ups can lead to a beautiful smile but were you also aware that it can save your life? Healthy teeth and gums are one line of defense to protect your heart from disease. As plaque builds on the surface of your teeth, the gums can become irritated and may bleed (gingivitis.) Left untreated, the gums begin to swell, opening gaps around the teeth. Plaque (food waste and bacteria) become trapped in these pockets. Plaque hardens to form tartar (calculus) and over time infects the gums and the underlying jaw bone. Eventually, teeth loosen and may fall out. Bacteria and bacteria waste can enter the blood stream and can cause significant damage to the heart and other organs. One such infection, subacute bacterial endocarditis, is a severe infection of the lining of the heart. Studies have shown that patients with severe periodontal disease had four times more harmful bacteria products in their blood stream than patients with moderate or no disease.
